Innovation has a Face

One of the most rewarding aspects of working in public-sector technology is seeing how innovation improves people’s lives. Sometimes it’s a new online service that makes it easier for residents to interact with their local government. Other times it’s a cybersecurity improvement that protects sensitive information, a GIS application that helps first responders make better decisions, or an AI pilot that allows staff to spend more time serving the public instead of processing paperwork.

These projects may differ in size and scope, but they have one thing in common: they all began with someone asking, “What if we tried something different?”

At WRITA, we believe those stories deserve to be shared.

One of the greatest strengths of our community is the willingness of members to learn from one another’s successes—and just as importantly, from the lessons learned along the way. Technology leaders understand that innovation rarely follows a straight line. Projects evolve. Priorities shift. Unexpected challenges appear. What matters most is the knowledge gained through experience.

Over the coming months, we’ll be highlighting members and agencies that are making a difference throughout the Western region. Some stories will feature large, enterprise-wide initiatives. Others will showcase smaller improvements that solve a persistent challenge or make daily work a little easier. Every story has value because every experience adds to our collective knowledge.

Do you have a project you’re especially proud of? Perhaps your team successfully implemented a new cybersecurity framework, improved digital services for residents, modernized infrastructure, or found a creative solution to a longstanding problem. We’d love to hear about it.

Sharing your story isn’t about recognition alone. It’s about giving another agency the confidence to begin a similar journey. Your experience could save another technology leader in weeks of research, inspire a new idea, or provide the encouragement needed to move an initiative forward.

As we prepare for the 2026 WRITA Fall Summit, member stories will become an important part of the conversation. They remind us that innovation doesn’t only come from keynote stages or breakout sessions. It comes from the people doing the work every day in communities across the West.

Thank you for being part of a community that believes knowledge grows when it’s shared.
